Colombia vs Paraguay
Date: Sunday, 23 June 2019
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Arena Fonte Nova (Salvador)
Colombia has ensured the top position in Group B and looks set to make a deep run in this competition. They began on the right note with inflicting a loss on the determined Argentine squad, against whom they had unsatisfactory h2h stats.
The Colombians were dominated in the latter half, but their physical superiority gave them a minor edge. The game ended in a 2-0 scoreline.
Asian Champions Qatar gave quite a ride to the Latin Americans. Contrary to expectations, the former stood strong throughout the tie, and it took a Duvan-Zapata-goal in the 86th minute to see them through with a 1-0 scorecard.
Paraguay should be disappointed with their results, as twice they threw away comfortable leads in both matches so far. They were tipped to be the favorites against invitee side, the Qataris. But the two-goal lead was made history by two goals from the opponents in the space of ten minutes.
Argentina had the confidence of delivering a huge 6-1 loss the last time these two met in a Copa tie. But the Paraguayans broke the deadlock first, and if not for a Lionel-Messi-penalty, they would have taken the three points on offer.
Colombia vs Paraguay Head-to-head (h2h)
Colombia won five of the last six meetings.
Nine of the last twelve wins went to the Colombians.
Four of the last six clashes saw Paraguay conceding two or more goals.
The Paraguayans were unable to keep a clean sheet in the last six battles.
Colombia vs Paraguay Prediction
Despite staying unbeaten so far in their campaign, Paraguay could see their chances of getting to the knockouts take a huge hit if they lose this match, and Argentina wins against Qatar. The team showed caliber in building winning positions in their matches, but could not hold on to it, and now it all boils down to this final fixture.
Colombia has the Group-Champions tag in their pocket, but they would want to keep the momentum going, with the knockouts starting soon. We can expect them to come out guns blazing and competitive as their ties so far have shown us.
They have dominated this particular rival for quite a long time. The team won five of the last six such meetings and recorded nine of the last twelve wins. Also, Paraguay was unable to keep a clean sheet in the last six encounters and conceded two or more goals in four of these.
As such, expect the Colombians to grind out a narrow win. Goals will be scarce in this tie considering the extremely competitive nature of the game. It’s the final group stage game, and Paraguay needs a win. They will just not roll over for their opponents to get an easy walk-through to the Quarter Finals.
Count on them to defend tooth and nail, and they will be undone only due to their counterparts’ form, and superior h2h performances.
